News from Simon Chikwana

We recently received a newsletter from our Field Director, Simon Chikwana.

Simon is a Malawian, based at zm's office in Blantyre, Malawi.  Simon is also a pastor within the Zambezi Evangelical Church, one of zm's church partners in Malawi.  This month's article is based on his newsletter, in which he writes about some of his recent experiences in Malawi. The following notes might be helpful as you read Simon's report:

  • Mgona is in Nsanje District, which is in the Lower Shire (pronounced Shi-ray) valley, in the very South of Malawi.
  • The current exchange rate is about £1 to MK800, so the total cost of the land at Mgona is about £125.  Land is relatively cheap in Malawi, but also unaffordable to most Malawians.
  • One way in which zm seeks to help churches in Malawi is with the cost of the roof for new churches.  Iron sheets are more durable and effective than local thatch which is sometimes used for church roofs.  But it is prohibitively expensive for most congregations.  When the local church members have built a church using their own resources, zm seeks to help them with the cost of new iron sheets.  There are many more churches that have asked for help with the cost of iron sheets than zm has the funds for.   But we have been able to provide iron sheets for one new church recently (as Simon reports), and were also encouraged by an incredible gift from a Malawian donor which enabled us to provide the sheets for three new churches.
  • From time to time, zm receives donations from businesses in Malawi.  Here Simon reports about a donation from a food processing company who operate throughout Malawi and produce foodstuffs like peanut butter.  Our Projects Officer Rose Chirwa was involved in the distribution of new blankets at two of our partner ZEC's ODCs.
